There
are more than 30 million Americans that have either COPD or Asthma
in this country, costing more than $36 billion dollars per year
in direct healthcare expenditures. There are 17 million Americans
who have a diagnosis of COPD alone. This diagnosis represents
the fourth leading cause of death and is continuing to increase
when other major disease categories are in decline.
Look for COPD in patients that are 45 or older and have the following
risk factors:
-
Persistent cough or progressive dyspnea
- Chronic
cough or sputum production
- Decline
in level of activity
- COPD
is more likely if there is a history of smoking
- Genetic
factors and environmental or occupational exposures may also
play a role: as many as 1 out of 6 Americans with COPD has
never smoked.
Pulmonary
Function Testing is the accepted method to diagnose, assess
therapeutic intervention and monitor progress of Respiratory
Disease and its impact on the Cardio-Pulmonary System.
