Carl was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated with honors from the University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School with a degree in physical therapy. He joined the team at K Valley Orthopedics in 1996. He has since gone on to complete his Doctorate of Science in Physical Therapy from Andrews University and is a Certified Manual Therapist through the North American Institute of Manual Therapy.
Carl specializes in working with athletes with an emphasis on movement science. He utilizes video analysis with runners, swimmers, cyclists and throwing athletes to determine if deficiencies exist in their biomechanics, which could lead to injury associated with their sport. He works with athletes on proper form and training techniques to help recover from injury and improve performance.
Carl has worked closely with distance runners. His doctoral project involved the study of lower extremity mechanics and its role in injury rates with marathon runners. He has been a marathon coach for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s “Team in Training” and in doing so had the opportunity to work with legendary coach and Olympian Jack Daniels. Carl has worked with the Kalamazoo Area Runners Club, the Borgess Run Camp and Gazelle Sports Marathon training program for many years. He has presented workshops at Western Michigan University and MSU-Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies. Carl has assisted in developing the Pump and Run (a race which combines weight lifting and running) in conjunction with the Kalamazoo Klassic.
Carl lives in Kalamazoo with his wife and three children. He enjoys spending time with his family and participating in marathons and multisport events such as adventure races, triathlons and pump and runs.
